THE RIVER DEARNE/YORKSHIRE

River Dearne/Yorkshire/North East England
The opening of the Dearne and Dove Canal in 1810 had serious impacts on the river, as it provided a way to transport the coal to the steelworks at Sheffield and Rotherham.
This is a small, winding river with very changeable swims and is mainly suited to the angler who likes to be on the move. Chub, perch, roach and the occasional good trout are on offer to anyone prepared to winkle them out.
The Dearne is free fishing, and very productive from Adwick down to Pastures Road. Well worth spending time on when you’re in Barnsley.
“The River Dearne: The Dearne Way path runs along the left hand side of the river. Water from old mine workings is discharged into the river just below the tree on the left hand. The water feeds through reed beds which produce, clean, stream water quality at the inlet to the river.”
