RIVER TONE/TAUNTON/SOMERSET/SOUTHWEST ENGLAND

You can fish for free, thanks to Taunton Council, through the centre of town from Firepool Weir to French Weir.

You can expect a full mix of fish here; chub to 6lbs, brown trout and perch to 2lbs, grayling to 1 ½ lb, plus roach, rudd, carp, bream and tench.

We’ve heard of salmon of 5lbs being caught at French Weir. The Tone’s grayling tend to shoal with chub, and the usual flies will work.  

Typically, a small weighted Hare’s Ear or Pheasant Tail nymphs between the weed beds, or matching the hatch when fish start rising.
