RIVER TAVY/TAVISTOCK

RIVER TAVY/TAVISTOCK/DEVON/SOUTHWEST ENGLAND

Tavistock Council used to sell day tickets but have given up, it’s too expensive to run - so, now, it’s all free!

The lower limit of the fishery is the A386 Plymouth Road Bridge, with fishing all the way up to the ancient packhorse bridge at Vigo Street: up to three quarters of a mile.

Wild trout in the Tavy average around half a pound, but you may encounter larger residents up to 2 or 3lbs, and sea trout up to 7lbs.

For resident trout,  Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ears work well in slightly coloured water when the gold can show through. Start with very small imitative.

For the sea trout, when they run, it’s an early morning start, or later in the evening.
