River Allen, Wimborne
There is free stretch on the River Allen within the town limits of Wimborne. I think it runs from the stone Bridge over the B3078 downstream to the next bridge over the ring road.
The Allen is a famed chalkstream, and an opportunity to fish it for free should be seized. If you’re new to fly fishing, buy a few gold ribbed hares ear with a brass bead head about size 14 , a pheasant tail nymph brass bead head in the same size will get you fish on most rivers, including the Allen. Fish the flies downriver and feel carefully for a tug from a willing trout.
The urban lower Allen is a good mixed chalkstream fishery. Wild trout, around half a pound, are quite common and larger triploid stocked fish up to 3 or 4lbs may also be about. Chunky grayling are here up to about a pound, as well as dace and chub.
The river is an increasingly important salmon spawning site.
