RIVER LAMBOURNE/NEWBURY/BERKSHIRE/SOUTHEAST
You can fish for free from the A4 London Road bridge upstream to Walton Way, courtesy of the Newbury Business Park and then by Newbury Town Council. Also, West Berkshire Council allows free fishing on the south bank of the river from the Shaw House footbridge to the gauging weir.
This delightful chalk stream can provide delightful grayling fishing in the cold winter months. We used to fish and it was so cold the ferrules on our rods would freeze over, making casting impossible after half an hour. The grayling will run to between 14 to 16 inches, a fair size. The water is usually crystal clear, so extreme stealth is necessary.
It’s also a fine river for coarse fishing, primarily the fine art of trotting is practised.
